Elon is bad because he doesn't sell products to customers. He sells hype to investors and bullshit to governments. If his ventures weren't subsidized by billions of dollars of public and private investment, he would be your run of the mill hype merchant that moves from failed project to failed project.

Yes it is. If you offer a product or service that cannot be supported by the price that you charge for said product or service, that product or service is being subsidized.
Unless you "Ackchually" every time someone uses the phrase "government subsidy" for being redundant, you passively acknowledge that the term has shifted over time.
