My wife is icelandic. She genuinely doesn't know much about her culture and loves talking about her 3% Irish heritage. Scandinavian isn't a thing in the US, so people from those cultures do t even realize what's happening.
The show is as much Scottish as it is Scandinavian, with several hints at Maori. The original writer based it on her summer visits to an island in Scotland. The show creators are Californian and can't tell the difference between Vikings and Maori.
So it was weird anyway. They're only making the show to drum up business for the new park in Orlando.
