It's a non-fantasy medieval RPG that tried to be immersive for the time period. It mostly is.
For me, I liked the bromance between Henry and Hans but now that they're gay I don't even care about pirating. Sure it's optional but the subtext is there you just chose not to act upon it. It makes their entire series of interactions dirty.
If you remove that, considering there is no magic or fantastic animal/ monsters etc, I don't know why people like it.
"Optional" is a weasel word to incorporate degenerate shit into games in a deceitful way.
It's a huge investment to plan, engineer, script, voice-act, model, animate, implement, QA, even a single scripted narrative sequence in a game like this. It's a lot of work, it costs real money to pay all the people involved across multiple different disciplines. Therefore we must conclude that someone cared a lot about including faggotry in the game.
Just imagine someone made a "R4p3" mod for Sims, giving Sims the option to jump on other Sims and act that out. We would assume that person is a disgusting weirdo, even if it was entirely "optional." And we'd be right to assume that, because it's clearly true.
Even the "choice" is pure but-thou-must railroad. It's not even "are you gay" but "do you want them to know you're gay"
This is not even mentioning the purely anachronistic diversity and #girlboss shit. Gaming in the 20s is for simps.
