Not liking the character designs, too cartoony, also don't like the mech designs from the last couple series, they all getting too skinny and with over designed spikes everywhere
Hey! Spikes are fucken stylish, even the original Zaku has that awesome spike pauldron, lol.
But sure that's fair to each their own what they like design wise. Another issue I got with the show is that the requirements to make a Gundam is vague enough as is, but every time I see the Gundam I just think "that's not a Gundam". This is coming from the Turn A fan.
So I am less optimistic about this Gundam show the more I see it. I hope I'm wrong, I want to see the first episode movie, hopefully in theaters.
I'll start with the good. So far the production quality looks great, the scenery of space colonies are breath taking. To me, the second coolest thing about the Gundam franchise is the space colonies, it's such a cool science fiction topic and the Gundam universe is about characters coming from numerous space colonies, not just one or two. I absolutely love seeing the detail the trailer gives about the colony and I want to see more. Of course the coolest thing about the Gundam franchise is the mechs but ....
...now onto the bad. To each their own on what they like to see in mech designs, some like walking tanks like MechWarrior and some like more power suits like Armored Core and Gundam, I personally love them all. These mech designs in Gundam GQuux don't look very good once you see them in their full size and still pictures. The lead Gundam itself looks more like a Evangalion unit, and the Zakus (the soldier grunt mechs) look like fat sumos. This is one of the few Gundam shows that's a collab with Sunrise, who are the current holders of doing Gundam animations (and they do a great job) and the Studio Karah, who have done the Neon Genesis Evangalion movies. I'll be honest, I think the studio Karah are trying to hijack the show with these awful designs just to do damage to a competitive studio. There is a joke that the Gundam of the show looks like it's the original Gundam but it sucked on a sour lemon. Another annoying trend is that this is the third Gundam show in a row to have the main character be female. She doesn't look like "girl boss" but this is getting weird. What's also bizarre is that the show is an alternative history of the original continuity of Gundam. It plays on the bad guy faction of the original Gundam winning the war. What's odd is that Gundam is already a franchise filled with alternative continuities so now they're doing an alternative of the original? Makes a person's head spin.
I hope this is a good Gundam show but I hope that this doesn't set a new standard. At least I have the second Hathaway movie later this year for a good mech military thriller.
Another thing that kind of annoys me too is Hideaki Anno is one the writers for it. Anno might be iconic in the anime sphere but Evangalion is a narrative mess. I think his ego will get in the way of the show just like how he has done some outrageous things when he was creating Evangalion. I think Anno will be one of those writers that thinks subverting expeditions is artwork.
Maybe I'm full of crap and he'll do a great job. Won't know until I see it.
Haman Karn??!!?? That's a stretch if that's who they think she is. If it is then honestly this alternative setting just has no meaning then. They could just make up any character and say it's a call out to UC continuity.
Haman Karn was a dutchess, born from nobility, became a very ambitious military leader and overall an evil bitch. She's one of my favorite Gundam characters because she owned being so vile. Great villainess.
Edit: okay I had to fact check myself, she was not born of nobility but it still doesn't change how I feel.
You'd have to look up the "evidence," but people were saying there were all sorts of teaser dates tying to important Haman dates, and the color schemes of this girl's normal suit, as well as the GQuuuX, compared to the Quebeley.
I'd argue that Gundam has been on a incredible roll lately with Gundam Unicorn, Gundam Thunderbolt,
and Hathaway. A lot of fans really liked Iron Blooded Orphans (wasn't my jam, had ups and downs).

looks decent, what's wrong with it?

I was in the middle of typing when you asked that, lol
Weird way to design Mobile Suits, setting is apparently Alternate Universal Century, and supposedly the MC is theorized to be Hxxxx Kxxx.
Eh, I honestly don't know what to think, or what to expect.

I'm not impressed. Characters look meh, animation looks meh, gundams look weird. Make Gundam great again. Even 00 was tolerable.

Unicorn was solid. IBO was mediocre imo.
