I don’t think we can call it a localizer issue at this point; As I understand it, the creator actually came out in support of this. The strongest cope is that thanks to translation or cultural barriers, maybe he doesn’t really get exactly what he’s supporting, but that’s a cope. It’s more honest at this point to acknowledge that they made an unfaithful, ideological retcon that can and should be discarded by people who aren’t crazy troons, but will be presented as official going forward.
