Fuck Paizo but Pathfinder Kingmaker really is the spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate 2 in scope and gameplay. Highly recommended if you like the top down crunchy crpg.
If you aren't familiar with 3rd edition expect to brick at least a couple of builds (there is respec though) and unless you are cool with the "mostly mercenary party" route expect that whatever fun build you pick will probably be redundant with one of the better companions. Also immediately switch Amari's class to 2 hander ranger because animal companions are busted and pure barbarian isn't nearly as good.
But if you have the patience a couple of "learning" restarts it really is a worthwhile gaming experience.
Also don't bother with the DLC, it really doesn't add anything.
3rd Ed Support Clerics bring the most to the party, pound for pound. They nerfed the living fuck out of them in 3.5, and they still are the strongest party build.
ive always stayed away from casters as mains because there is so much combat in these games that they and up being really fiddly and also to be optimal require resting between every fight
i ended up with the classic ranger archer for my main as the companion archer has suboptimal build choices for story reasons so i didnt mind ditching him, specifically the wolf is so much worse than the similodon
between 2 animal companions, 2 hander ranger amari and nok nok (who is kind of busted) that is a strong enough front line
also because of how party encumbrance works 2 animal companions massively increases your total carrying capacity so you dont have to worry about dumping those hide armors before selling them
The ranger archer seems to not have the highest damage ceiling but its been good enough so far. I think the only encounter that I couldn't beat out on the first try was the black dragon because he has like 45 AC and fear aura, but i haven't quite beaten the game yet. The ghost guards also gave me a bit of trouble, also mostly because of spam aoe fear and my front liners mostly weak will saves.
Apparently wild shape druid is also supposed to be pretty broken because there is a way to weave monk levels in for their goodies but havent really researched that deeply into it.

Wildshape druids kick the most ass in combat.
