Honestly, bringing him back reads less like a carefully crafted move to destroy our heroes and much more like desperation to use his name and power to save their dying ship.
And considering Loki was beaten and humiliated in the original Avengers and went on to be the wet dream of millions of girls throughout the series, it might work a little.
He was at least beaten, literally, by the strongest Avenger on the roster. While he might have had what amounted to short brawls with Captain America then later Thor neither really managed to stop him properly. Hulk just ragdolled him into the floor with very little effort.
Of course, but the point is that if the character/actor is likeable/hot enough then it doesn't matter what they do to him. It'll be met with considerable applause.
