When WCW was dying in 2000, their pay-per-view buyrates at one point got so low, they refused to release them.
Then the AOL Time Warner merger happened, Ted Turner lost all his power, and he couldn't write their checks anymore. Company was sold for a song to Vince McMahon in early 2001, and American pro wrestling had to suffer through a monopoly for the next 18 years.
