This is usually why having a good debate (logical, honest, civil, and prioritizing truth above all else) with someone who holds a false belief is nearly impossible, because people cling to those beliefs like an anchor, often doubling down on their own stupidity. I wish it wasn't so, but it's been the lion's share of my experience on the subject, personally having debates and observing others debate.
