The Aristocratic Utensil sided with Melonie on this issue as well.
His argument essentially boiled down to "I don’t care for fan service in games, I play for story. So everyone else is a coomer".
And I suppose this is where a difference in principle happens, since Utensil is kind of strange in his (probably due to the whole "unironic monarchist" thing). On paper, I agree with him. I care about gameplay and story, I think that games that have to rely on fan service are cringe (although having fan service in itself isnt an issue, just if it is a crutch), and my taste are so backward compared to your typical coomer that I typically find looks like this to be infinitely sexier than looks like this.
But I would never, in a million years, demand the latter be banned or censored. Because that is always, always, what those who seek to control you do to get their foot in the door and start driving that wedge in to eventually micromanage your entire life. And so even if it is not my taste or something I care about, I will absolutely defend it in full. And if the likes of Melonie and Utensil have an issue with that, then they can take a number and get back in the enemy line where they probably would have been in 2000.
I think it's less than Melonie & Spoon are calling for booba censorship and more that they are making an argument that gamers liking tiddies are cringe and "just as bad as the troons".
Which has a kernel of truth, but is also a James Lindsay "woke right" tier strawman argument.
Spoon AFAIK doesn't even have the born-again Christian LARP moralism going on. He's mostly just arrogant.
There was a point in a youtube comment Spoon acknowledged by liking which he pinned and then later unpinned and I cannot find any more. Here's what I remember the commenter pointing out, roughly:
I think Spoon pointing out that fanservice at the top of the degeneracy slippery slope (fanservice is the point of the wedge, if you will, being driven into the culture; porn is in there too. same vice, different point in the spectrum.) is exceptionally aggravating polemic. He's being inflammatory on purpose because he's an arrogant utensil. I really want to dismiss him, but find I can't.
Vox Day talks a lot about a love of "the Good, the Beautiful, and the True." One of the real dangers of lust, as a vice, is pitting a(n excessive) desire for the Beautiful against the Good.
And yeah, this is the point Spoon's making-- even as he tells gamers to stop watching. Our bias will be towards good gameplay, not the moral consequences of pervasive lust. There's a broader conversation to be had about sexualization in our society. As gamers, we rankle at it because games are one of the vectors being used for both LGBT and Lust-based attacks on childhood. Spoon is aggravating because he's not being 'fair' to the medium, but his argument 'from the outside' is one gamers have to contend with. Yeah, Spoon's being arrogant and infuriating, the points he's making are from the outside and aren't really 'fair' to gaming, but (taken as polemic) how is he wrong?
More to the point, now that the Right is getting back a modicum of power, where is the line we have to hold, collectively, against the slippery slope the power of Slannesh presents?
