It's not that James Rolfe isn't interested in modern video games, he simply isn't passionate or interested in video games since he became an adult, period.
The entire AVGN persona is a complete ruse.
James doesn't care about retro videogames as a hobby or passion either despite making a living that he pretends he does for two decades.
He wrote an autobiography a few years back and he barely mentioned video games or his YT success at all. He was also literally a special needs kid he was so much of a sperg.
He's much more interested in old horror films and filmmaking (though he's lazy, narrow and mostly incompetent when it comes to that too). He also is more passionate about death metal and plays bass in a very cringe videogame-themed cover band called Rex Viper.
Mike Matei who used to appear in some of the oldest AVGN videos is the actual passionate video game nerd. But he has no charisma and is a quick tempered manchild.
That massive video game collection he owned before ever becoming the angry video game nerd flies in the face of him not loving games, and it was also impossible to predict that a funny video he made on the internet 2 decades ago would later become his main source of income.
Calling his persona a "ruse" is also odd because it was rarely meant to be taken very seriously to begin with. Its clearly a show for entertainment, he's not a game journalist or anything.
As for his autobiography, I dunno anything about that, but I know he's got plenty of content on YT already talking about his AVGN stuff as it is and how important it was to him, it seems like people just want the guy to be 100% AVGN all the time.
He also is playing games he hasn't played before, and seems to be enjoying them in some cases. You can't watch something like his Earthbound video and say he doesn't at least still have some fondness for video games after that, and that was a video made after what most people would consider his decline.
Never watched him. Next bullshit claim.
Don't bother.
He peaked over a decade ago.
Then was revealed as a lazy sperg who hasn't been interested in vidya since the N64.
"The guy who makes videos about old video games isn't interested in new games" isn't really that shocking.

Eh, I disagree with some of that.
