Instead of taking a specific point and contriving the story to hammer it down, Miyazaki takes a point and universalizes it through symbolism so that it separates from the crude moorings of reality and provokes emotion and introspection from many angles. One of those angles, of course, is the environment, but human industry does sometimes damage nature and that subject does deserve consideration and restraint.
