Meh. Running by the logic they are going with, this isn't out of character for the actual Samurai class (obviously they wouldn't be hanging out in armor, but still). You couldn't just be a peasant and ignore the presence of the Samurai walking around. They were effectively the elites of a very hierarchical system and you were required to treat them as better than you.
Respect yes, probably not to the extent of standing there and hold the bow unless it's some big wig's procession, pausing a bit with a light bow was probably good enough for rando samurai just walking by
Not for me. I was a samurai in a past life, an Irish one to be precise. When my good dear friend Miyamoto Musashi first met me, he had his servants douse me with water because he thought my hair was on fire.
Anyway, after mastering Japanese and reaching the high social class of samurai(well actually I was just the emperors body guard) I took the job very seriously. I killed 2 people for not bowing, even though they had a daughter.
I was young then and couldn't bring myself to kill her too. I felt so bad that I decided to take her with me. I raised her like she was my own blood to soothe my guilty conscience. Even now she thinks of me as her brother. From the outside, we might have seemed like a happy brother and sister. But every time I looked at her, I saw her parents' eyes staring back at me
