The thing about watergate was it was novel that the people found out. It's more common now, so I don't think its' about the magnitude of the political crimes but the media-pushed attitude of the people.

People actually believed the Presdient or whoever wouldn't do that. now, people are under no such illusions . We generally think of politicians as criminals.
