"At first, the predominantly male chat rooms seemed to foster friendship. Users shared advice on relationships, careers and giving up cannabis. But suddenly, the players would turn and the entire group would start hurling slurs at strangers."
No word what the stranger said tho, maybe someone wanted some benefits for being a female in real life or asked tourist questions? Also I am fine with having female/male seperated chats but I guess then grifters like her complain they arent included like always.
In many in-game chats, hurling insults IS part of the advice and friendship.
You ask for advice in PoE, in example, and you've got a 50% chance of someone saying "read the item, you dense MFer, you're not illiterate, you typed here, go read it, it's literally one line long, and tells you exactly what you wanted to know.", which is perfectly accurate and helpful advice, and deters and cows disrupters from needless follow-up questions so other people who need advice can also step up and ask, only to be told to read the damn tooltips.
