I guarantee you they fake their work hours which is why they take so 'long' with games development and they use the length of time to try and artificially hype the game. Here's how I think the scam works and why games take so much 'time' to develop yet always keep coming out shit. There's no other explanation with how consistently bad every new release has been.
Retarded DEI Capital Investor with too much money: Hey! We love your game idea and how it has so much diversity and talks about inclusion! How much will it cost?
Woke Dev CEO: Oh uh, it will cost a few million at least! Games are expensive and take a lot of time, they're very complicated to make
Retarded DEI Capital Investor with too much money: Really? Well we'd better give you a couple of hundred million to make sure you get it finished! By the way, we want you to hire as many diverse employees as possible so be sure to get on that early, how long do you think it will take?
Woke Dev CEO: Wait really? ( They can't believe the scam is working at this point and they offered that much money ) Well it will take a very long time I'd say 8 - 10 years and of course we'll make sure to hire as many ethnically diverse people and women as well
Retarded DEI Capital Investor with too much money: That's great! Here's all your money upfront!
Woke Dev CEO: Holy shit I can't believe that actually worked
Woke Dev CEO then proceeds to hire a bunch of DEI employees for as little as possible depressing wages big time because all the other corporations copy each other. May get a couple of people he knows with actual programming and art skills to do all the real work and pay them properly.
Sometimes they don't even do that though and will simply rip off a bunch of assets from the store and have the DEI hires plonk a bunch of stuff into the game to make it look like the world is filled and they're doing something.
Actual work on main characters is probably them taking assets from some place because they're getting so much money for doing nothing so they can pay a few hundred for characters and then edit them up. The likely amount of time they spent in total is a week because they probably went to the lengths of simply buying a third person controller for example and a QTE generator of some sort that way.
Edit: Being generous 'maybe' they spent some time on animating but given half the cycles you see in games these days look like they were ripped off mixamo and you probably wouldn't even notice I'm doing a big doubt on that. I just remembered as well the Bungie CEO is a classic example of this, all these woke devs at the bottom of the ladder don't understand how disposable they really are. So they act all shocked when their CEO screws them all because he can since they weren't ever that necessary for developing the game in the first place.
Devs insist on doing the "video games are expensive and complex" larp because if they didn't everyone would realise how full of shit they are.
They also drag it out for I come reasons. I can't imagine these people actually get glowing reviews or their projects are massive successes (seriously, I don't) that speak for themselves. So they probably don't have steady employment. Drag out the project to earn those extra shekels. And when it inevitably does bad blame white people or a toxic work environment. Burn it all down. Infiltrate and subvert a new employer, and repeat.
When you think about it with the amount of money that gets pissed away on these projects realistically if they're barely spending any money on production they can pocket the difference and live comfortably for the rest of their lives. It's a pretty brilliant con and they hate gamers so it's not as if they're trying to win credibility or build a legacy.
The more I do the maths on how much these guys are probably paying themselves the more it makes sense. The only thing that's missing is the government rabbit hole and glowies trying to commit game developers to mass surveillance on their own playerbases. It was already found out that Riot games had a psychologist attempting experiments on them so it's not that much of a stretch.
