All men still have the primitive part of our brain that wants to die in combat and do so in some legendary way. Modern technology has dehumanized war so much that it takes away all the glory or honor possible in such a death.

So not only are these guys dying horribly far from home for something stupid, they are often losing the only possible good thing that could possibly come from such a final existence.
