Even ignoring the collusion accusations in the petition, is it really that surprising that modern day Australia picked someone who wrote a PhD thesis entitled "Deterritorializing gender in Sydney's breakdancing scene" and was lead author on a paper in which "We discuss the ways popular music studies, and then dance studies, has engaged with the theme of protest."?

This was 100% a political pick.
Some PhD theses are things like "neutron flux in muon-induction cold fusion" or "conductivity of uranium salts under 100 kelvin"
Some other is "Deterritorializing gender in Sydney's breakdancing scene"
Both are called science though.
And both will call themselves Dr. X and the second camp will call themselves a PhD loudly with the "in what" being left unsaid.
