There's a gag in Family Guy, which I'm sure is from a movie but I don't know it, with Peter surrounded by a gang and he has his knuckles taped and it's raining. He punches himself in the face until he bleeds and says, "I came here to die tonight."

The implication being unless you cane with the same level of intensity, it will go badly. I don't think many people in the west are prepared to beat their own face and die....yet.
