Highly unlikely. The First Amendment does quite a lot of heavy lifting to protect the press. Trump is a "public figure" because he's basically a house-hold name. To win a defamation claim, you need to create significant articulable damage from each claim. The press basically have a right to slander you, but they just can't explicitly lie about you.
"Trump ordered himself to be shot" = actionable
"Some say: Trump ordered himself to be shot" = not actionable.
That's the thing, they shot themselves in the foot going after Alex Jones because they're basically doing what he did except instead of a mass shooting it's the assassination.
