Basically it levels the Playing field so that 3/10 girls who weren't handed everything in life and had to grow an actual personality to get by in life can compete with vapid ethots without showing their face.
That, and because of the nature of the medium you basically have to play video games, which is an easy way to impress nerds on the internet, especially if you rise above basic competence while being female.

Eh, knowing a lot of different female V-Tubers alt accounts/past lives/whatever you wanna call them at this point, that's not that true tbh. There's a lot more 7-10s, and a lot of why some of them chose VTubing is for the sake of security/making sure no one stalks them, and considering many of them go to conventions still wearing face masks even though COVID's long gone and still have creeps follow them, I get it.
Also, sometimes it is more fun to just play a character instead of yourself. I have considered taking up VTubing as a side way to make money, and while the personality would just be my normal one played up a bit, it is still would be playing it up.
The one thing I would tell myself if I had a time machine is to take a gap year before college and use that gap year to get a part time job and become a vtuber, because that was six years ago before Hololive even had a second generation, and the market back then was way less saturated. I might not end up becoming the biggest, but I at least have a shot + knowing how my life has gone on since then, the main things that would've changed is that I would have moved out of mom's house during lockdown and wouldn't have taken any COVID shots at all.
But back to vtubing in general, in terms of models and such, getting one of those 'general use' ones just to see how you feel about streaming before commissioning your own model goes a long way, but I'm sure you probably have already done most of that research
Conceptually I don't understand VT at all.
Like, at foundational level I go right into Bob mode.
