I'm not a native speaker but is this a Mandela effect where the word "competence" doesn't exist anymore? Same for "relevancy", the -y sounds like some weird zoomer slang to me. I'm waiting for "performancy" to show up next.
the -ancy endings are actually a fair bit older. I think it's a load of HR and legalspeak rather than zoomers though that have brought back 'dependency', 'relevancy' and 'competency'
I don't know. I know that the word has been used before in legal jargon, as in "Not restorable to competency" before, probably for a long time. I do think the word "competence" is still a thing, at least.

According to Wikipedia, it's HR speak. Apparently "competence" is "what the job required" and "competency" is "what skills you have"
