I can't think of anyone who has ever believed he had it in the first place. People just didn't care to push him on it because it was unfathomable that people would trust him after the last dozen fraud scandals.

The only difference I guess now is that he has been stagnant for so long that the slow attrition of his devoted fans has reached a point where he is feeling the burn a lot more each time.
