The hilarious thing is looking at it in more detail it does appear to be a physical fire they're using, I think they've even got real smoke going there or it's an incredibly good render. However in typical patched together fashion it was done in a completely half-arsed way as expected of Hollywood studios these days, which is a shame because making more use of physical props would be a very good idea.
