The incident that broke through my wall of ignorance was the Kavanaugh hearings.
The utter dissonance between what was happening and what the media told me was happening was too great. Made me look back at everything I was ever told and question all of it.
It was Charlottesville for me. I wasn't a leftoid before; just kind of apolitical and didn't take much of a side. Which is a condition that could have led to becoming NPC-lite several years later if left unchecked.
Saw so many friends having a meltdown about orange man supposedly praising Nazis and I thought that I finally had the smoking gun that would let me agree with all the people around me parroting that he was a white supremacist (I was in university at the time). Watched the speech for myself and was absolutely floored at the difference between the reality versus what was being reported and discussed.
