On one hand I can't take allegation of rape on face value. I read the wiki and there isn't a lot of detail.
Why were they at the village? PFC, PFC and a PVT going to a village by themselves sound less like a detail and more like they were off post on their personal time. Not in a squad, no NCO, without weapons. Repeated visits suggest they aren't there to hand out chocolate bars (ahem). So yeah sounds like they were up to no good.
I did find it humorous they called the cave Kuronbō Gama (黒ん坊がま), cave of the black boys, instead of Kuroi Yūrei Gama (黒い幽霊がま), cave of the black ghosts, which just talking out of my ass, I assume they don't want the cave to be haunted by black ghost.
It matches the behavior of ferals when they attack those who have bent the knee before - they think no one will fight back, especially when they have a corrupt DA to release them right away.
PS: Yurei, or ghosts are hard-working and law-abiding citizens and are fully integrated with society, something they cannot be.
