Rome even gifted it a very nice fountain for its riverfront because of this, in the 1990s (though they started to come in droves in the early 20th century - my grandfather's first job before going to Chrysler was working with Italian masons to install the marble flooring in the downtown post office.) The old architecture all over the city has their fingerprints all over it.
When this song came out, it was #1 for weeks. The Detroit DJs even got kind of exasperated over how many Windsor Italians were calling in and requesting it, and said so on air.

Oh, yeah. You should see what happens whenever Italy wins the World Cup. At least it's peaceful chaos.
