It does not surprise me in the least. There is a high chance this comes from IBM, I remember finding it funny that when ever there were job cuts it was always older white men that got fired despite having black people with much worse metrics. White guy had a bad year, bam fired, black chick being bottom of the barrel for years, Indian woman that did barely any work - no problem. Everyone accepted it at the time, it's strange how easily we accepted discrimination because there were not enough of them to be a big deal.
In IBMs defense, they were very fair with compensation. If someone had to be let go they would be given a considerable amount of money and usually the guys that had to be let go were happy with the deal.
