I get what you're saying. They really shouldn't be counted on the same way a close male friend could be. But they can still be pleasant acquaintances even if you're not sexually or romantically interested in them.

And if you want to be a cynical strategist about it, a mixed friend group brings in more women, including the ones who you are interested in.
