He made a persona of 'a mad man with access to the nuclear button' and that unnerved a lot of the international opponents as they believed he'd do it. From there he then offered them deals to basically improve trade relations while de escalating, he made quite a bit of progress in North Korea and huge progress in the middle east.

It was deliberate and quick that it shook Iran and you could see they were unnerved to start major hostilities for fear of that kind of reprisals. He even got a deal to leave Afghanistan and it looked like it would be a successful extraction.

Then Biden got in, and all that work went away day one. The moving of the Afghanistan exit to spite Trump pissed off everyone in that country that caused the shambles we saw later that year. Russia no longer saw the US as competent enough to fully stop them and the middle east slowly dissolved back into infighting not scared of an immediate reprisal. This is because Biden approached these parts of the world with the 'we have the higher morality' approach so you should just do as we say which only pisses them off. Trump approached them accepting their culture as the leader with the biggest military and if you don't want feel it you'll either stay out of our way or work with us and in which case you make some money.
