Supposedly he stepped down to focus on recovering from his illness (stomach ulcers?) but it's interesting that he stayed on as an MP and kept being involved in politics for a few years after that. He still seemed capable of leading. It is suspicious and makes me think of how there were two popes because one suddenly became ill and then spent the next 9 years praying and writing essays and occasionally going to public events - but somehow couldn't do all that as the pope. Yeah.

Yeah. Despite not being PM, he was very much the philosophical head of the LDP. His removal as PM wasn't enough.
