Yes but it's not just about her perception of her appearance but the main point is actually her perception of where she stands on the overall social hierarchy. u/marsupialLarge kind of alludes to it but seems to think it's about the mid chick finally getting the opportunity to cutdown some guy. No, the women cutdown the guy hard because she's scared of others perceiving her social status as being equivalent to the man who she perceives as not having high enough social status to want to be seen as being equal to. Hot women don't have as much fear of their social status being ruined by ugly men hitting on them because the hot women understand they're so hot no one would think the lower social status man has a chance with her and even if she gave him that chance, her social status wouldn't be impacted. The mid women fear that the lower status men will drag their social status down and overreact in cutting these men down as a defense mechanism and in an attempt to signal their status superiority to high status people.
That has been my observation anyhow. I think it has less to do with appearance/looks and more to do with perceived "social status" more than anything. Mid women are insecure about their status and want to be perceived as being high status. Looks obviously correlates with social status and especially for women. The men women can attract also correlates to status. But it's not really about appearance so much as it is about status.
