Their job is to uphold our rights as citizens, enact legislation as per our will, and enforce the laws inasmuch as they don't interfere with our rights. That's it, nothing about safety.
Every lawyer or law maker in a democratic country should be required to read Thomas Paine because he lays it out clearly. Government cannot be responsible for our safety because the time of our death is chosen by God and government is not more powerful than God.
I really think some people don't understand this: everything ends, including governments, so to say that they are even able to protect you in the first place is laughable.
