TikTok is already heavily censored, they are not banning it because of the content, the argument is that if China bans Google, Twitter and Facebook why should we allow Chinese tech companies like TikTok to operate here, let them taste their own medicine. Why do you think Chinese tech companies do so well in their home country? Because all of their competitors are banned.
If that was the case, could have done it when Trump was in office because China was already doing it then, but Congress didn't want it and media screeched holy hell as apparently China wasn't evil.
It's an election year, Russia is holding out in Ukraine, Israel is losing their narrative over the Gaza situation, users are moving away from the major social media honeypots, and the Congress critters are pissing their pants post-pandemic about how much people are seeing the bullshit. With all the context, this isn't about choking China's influence and giving it back to them, it's because the government doesn't have full control over the flow of information on the US portion of the Internet. They're giving themselves a way in.
TikTok is censored in all the wrong ways. Underage girls doing thirst traps and furry dancing is still rampant on the app.
Meanwhile TikTok in China is heavily regulated to only show educational videos and whatnot. It is a blatant use of weaponized social media to attack our youth and the only thing that is censored is anything remotely right-wing that endangers the propaganda machine

I fail to see what Putin or Hamas terrorists have to do with any of this other than they are both supported by China.
