They're just starting to retcon my "coming of age" time of the late 90s/early 00s as horribly oppressive -- which is bullshit* -- so yeah I'd believe they lied about earlier times too.

*They were starting to install metal detectors in the high schools in "poor school districts", so it wasn't all sunshine and roses. But that's not what they mean by "horribly oppressive", because in all the ways normal people would have considered them "horribly oppressive" at the time, today they're even worse.
