Modern anime translating "I don't hate [thing]" to "I love [thing]", to me, damages the character's character. They switch from being in a negative statement to a positive one, even if the meaning itself is more or less similar, but plenty of people would say "oh, that's innocuous, a girl saying she likes a guy, or saying she doesn't hate him, 100% the same thing! You're jousting at windmills!"
