There's quite a few less than mediocre shows on network TV that just seem to go on for fucking ever.

Not exactly a new trend either, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's become more common in recent years. Network and broadcast TV in general is essentially on life support, with terminal death somewhere on the horizon.
