But did anyone ever tell Shane MacGowan that they've never actually had a choir?
But also I think (I could be wrong, but) at least some of that song is fantasy, no..?
Sort of lines up with the "they've got cars big as bars, they've got rivers of gold" line, i.e. it's the "land of dreams", until it then isn't - "when the wind blows right through you, it's no place for the old", so maybe the couple in question dreamed up the choir, too..?
Dunno. I always found it funny that people took that song literally (and then took offence to the lyrics), when both Shane and Kirsty were very clearly singing in character throughout...
Like a lot of MacGowan's songs (A Pair of Brown Eyes, for example), it sort of vacillates between two different narratives: The first being the fantastical, idealistic expectations the two narrators had at the beginning of their relationship, and the second describes their present bitterness at the reality. And then he turns it around right at the end with "I built my dreams around you." The man was a genius.
Man, that's a left field reference! Took even me a minute to think it through, and I unironically love that song, lol...
