The whole thing is just so soulless, the project succeeded because Eric July is black and the "counter culture" crowd desperately wanted to prove that they're not racist.

That tracks with most of the comments on readcomicsonline, and nobody there has any financial motivation when reviewing things considering the nature of the site. In fact from what I remember there was a troll making the same immature comments in every issue about one of the names of someone involved and said troll was being called out for it by those who were also criticising the comic.
It just doesn't seem to be a good story, or have art that's enjoyed.
