Racial component aside, I'd argue someone has to be 3rd generation before they can begin to say they have roots in a country. First-gen immigrants often act more American or whatever on the surface, but there will be subtle differences they won't understand, based on cultural traits passed down through our family history.
Someone who is confident and humble about who they are does not need false platitudes and back-patting.
