Death row is not a fun place in Japan. You also do not get any interaction with prisoners, you can barely do anything, no TV etc. Saw a documentary about it a while ago. As you said, you are not told until the day of the execution so every single night you go to bed you gotta think this has to be my last. Mostly because they had suicides before so I think they changed how they do it and no suicide occurs.
