They should have taken notes from Soul Calibur, which did much the same with its 5th game only to basically kill the series. 6 was a mass return to form, but it was basically too late to pull it back from near death.
And even worse, once you've shown you will even consider things like DOA did (more stripped content, more DLC, more censorship, sucking up to people who hate your fans) it doesn't matter if you change your mind. Your reputation and word are stained.
