I've seen examples of it used well but they're the exception and not the rule unfortunately.
It promotes an unhealthy short attention span and that's why it feels like some massive tragedy gets forgotten in a week. 9/11 with the current attention span would barely last a month in public consciousness with this attention span, it's that bad.
This is true, I view normies as the goldfish people because of this, they swim around the bowl once and then by the time they're done they've already forgotten they went round the same place again. Yep, I think that's why I decided to almost completely switch off on trending pages because of this creepy mass amnesia effect.
The media know exactly what they're doing with it as well which as the saying on the internet now goes if you see them spamming about a particular news story figure out what they're trying to distract your from. More often than not it's something shady as fuck a corrupt politician has done but instead the normies are busy freaking out about a royal coronation.
I actually rather hate socialising with the normies precisely because of this, more often than not they're exactly like you describe and they really do forget shit within a month sometimes even sooner so good luck having any meaningful conversation with somebody. I also reckon as well this is part of why the younger generations have such a time trying to form any kind of real social relationship. Very easy to act like a psychopath and perhaps unknowingly(?) treat people as disposable if you just forget shit constantly and only care about things in the past couple of days. Then it makes so much more sense when so many of them have emotional problems and are just unstable as fuck with depression etc.
Admittedly does make me think about some of my own experiences with attempts at socialising. I realised I veered off into the social aspect but the more I think about this the more I think there's a link psychologically and it would explain so much about how people interact with each other these days. Especially when it comes to the explosive outbursts that seem to be quite common these days.
