Credit where credit is due, she's probably a better public speaker and debater than I will ever be. I can know the information and understand it, but I've always been terrible at transmitting that information to other people and changing their minds. I tend to just make them become defensive and obstinate.

No, when I'm talking to family members, my goal is normally to try to convince. Instead I receive anger and refusal to engage honestly. The fact that I research events independently and don't just blindly believe what's said on the news is used as justification to label everything I say as "wrong". I have no idea how to debate against that.
