Lanthimous is a good director (Dogtooth, for one) but this was written for modern Hollywoke, which means it's going to have lesbians, blacks, etc. in a period where they're not really that common. Just look at 'The Favourite', where he threw in lesbian story elements and a couple of black royals in the backgrounds to become eligible for several woke award ceremonies.
