The problem with Jon Stewart is that he had a comedy routine, but the writing staff is what drove the show. Sure he could veto stuff here and there (like the Sarkeesian visit that got bumped to the Colbert Report for example, that was supposedly his doing)
And speaking of Colbert, his departure from Strangers with Candy also gimped that show. I knew then he was just in it for the money and fame. He left that show for a show with his name on it.
When Stewart would visit the show, his 'jokes' were just rants about the government, in a bitter resentful voice. We get it, you don't like Trump. It seems like everyone dislikes the man. And yet he pulled off a hail mary despite insane opposition.
And with Colbert, when he was a fake republican, he was funnier then too.
I guess what I have to do is look at the writing staff for those shows and find out where they went. Because the funny went with them.
All MSM "comedy" during the Trump administration seemed that way to me, and I don't recall anything like it before Trump. Obama was totally off-limits, of course. Before Obama I vaguely recall Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien having their own light-hearted flavors of political humor, mostly targeted toward the sitting president. GWB was mocked as a doofus while Bill Clinton was mocked as a womanizer and Hillary as a witch.
