No one would have given a shit if Ariel had a black mermaid friend, or even if they made a spin-off about said black mermaid friend. It was about replacing ARIEL as a white, redheaded mermaid, which is the image everyone was familiar with.

It's like making Fat Albert a skinny white dude, instead of giving the Cosby Kids a white side character.
