The term mosquito is the common name given to every single species of Fly [Order: Diptera] found in Family: Culicidae.
There are about 3600 of these.
They are pretty much everywhere except Antarctica, and maybe Iceland.
The above two points are why "mosquitoes" will never, ever be eradicated because there are simply too many of them.
Not all mosquitoes are vectors [carriers] of insect borne diseases [zoonoses] and those that are will only carry specific diseases. They are Genus/species locked in most cases so you will only ever catch Dengue from an Aedes [aegyptii] mosquito rather than an Anopheles [gambiae] which carries Malaria or Culex [modestus] which carries West Nile Virus.
The different species not only have different periods of activity during the day, some are only active during dusk and dawn while others will be active during the day, but the species have different postures when idle, postures that can be distinctive enough to ID the species with a glance.
Only female mosquitoes drink blood, males feed on flower nectar and consequently function as pollinators.

My father in law is Icelandic so I can confirm, no mosquitos.
Also, mosqua means fly in Spanish if I remember correctly.
