i don’t get it. These people always have an office full of interns working for them. Nobody bothered to research the guy beforehand? The internet sure seemed aware of him.

People are dumb. Corrupt people get complacent. Those who've 'made it' into whatever station become stagnant. Habituation towards taking it easy meant nobody cared enough to be diligent.

That's how things like this happen.
