"The victim and the suspect were friends." Ha. Friends. Ghetto trash have no friends. You only need to listen to them talk to one another to understand that. There is no note of politeness, respect, gratitude, civility, or affection in the way they interact. Their discussions are always loud, argumentive, and laced with hostility, like they're constantly sizing each other up and looking for a fight for the most retarded reasons. The only reason they don't immediately kill each other is because they know they've got bigger fish to fry who they will drop everything for to attack, usually in the form of some ghetto trash from a rival gang. That gives them a little more tolerance for "dissing" from their ilk but that doesn't mean things won't boil over between them.
This is the one they do hold in high regard. But not in the sense most of us understand it, but closer to a peasant interacting with a noble. In that, you need to be constantly deferring to them to keep them placated or else they will snap and come at you with a force completely uneven with the perceived slight.
Its why Chappelle was able to make "when keeping it real goes wrong" and everyone laughed. Because that's their understanding of "respect" and how to react to perceived disrespect.
Including, as is my assumption in this case, not giving up some sauce when asked and then having the gall to defend yourself.
